WELCOME TO S+S
I am not alone in saying that music is deeply personal and that we are all naturally attuned to it. It connects to culture, emotion, memory, and identity. But behind every artist, album, and viral moment is a carefully constructed strategy. From branding and social media to rollout campaigns and partnerships, the music industry is as much about strategy as it is about sound.
This blog, Sound and Strategy, explores the intersection of music and public relations. Its purpose is to break down how artists, teams, labels, and industry professionals use PR, marketing, and media strategy to shape not only what we hear but also how we perceive, interpret, and engage with it. This blog looks beyond the music itself—it pulls back the curtain to understand how artists build brands, how songs gain traction, and how reputations are managed in an industry that moves at a rapid pace.
My interest in this topic comes from a combination of my academic focus and personal passion. As a Public Relations major with a minor in Science Communication at the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon, I am especially interested in how storytelling and audience engagement influence public perception and culture. Music has always been a central part of my life, shaped by growing up in San Diego in an artistic environment surrounded by creatives.
Throughout this blog, I will cover topics such as artist branding, social media strategy, marketing, and crisis communication within the music industry. For example, I may explore how major events like festival appearances or album releases serve as strategic opportunities for artists to reinforce their image and connect with audiences. I am particularly interested in how digital platforms have transformed music promotion—turning moments into movements and fans into active participants in an artist’s success, story, and reputation.
In terms of experience, my background in media production and content strategy has helped me understand how I construct and communicate narratives across platforms. I want to share my analysis and engage with the perspectives of others. I have worked on developing brand identities and aligning creative vision with public image, which directly connects to how artists are positioned in the music industry. This blog is an extension of that work and an opportunity to apply those skills in a more analytical, industry-focused context.
Ultimately, Sound and Strategy is designed to provide insight into the mechanics behind the music industry. It invites readers to look beyond the surface and consider how strategy shapes the artists and content we engage with every day. Whether you are interested in music, media, or public relations, this blog aims to provide a more profound understanding of how these worlds intersect.
